Black Thought II

The trials and tribulations of a 23-year-old college student who in his head thinks he's already a star in the journalism world. Ok, ok, maybe not a star...

Mr. Clutch

So a couple months ago I blogged about my friend Brian who plays minor league baseball.

At the time I had July 30th circled on my calendar because his team would be in Delaware for the weekend.

But a week before, he was promoted to the AA team and his Akron team would be heading to Trenton, NJ for the weekend.

The night prior, a mutual female friend of ours went to go see him and he was "nervous" and snapped his 18-game hit streak with a nice 0-4 performance.

When I told him I was going earlier in the week, I askde for at least a stolen base and a home run.

I really would have been happy with a stolen base honestly.

By the time I got the game, I missed his first at-bat, a single, and was cursing myself for getting lost in case he wasn't going to get another hit the rest of the game.

In between innings, he spotted me in the crowd and proceed to look foolish at the plate and whiffed.

"Great, here we go" I was thinking in my head. "Maybe he doesn't perform well when his friends are in the crowd."

His next at bat, before I even had a chance to get my camera, he took a first pitch fastball to dead center and off the 405 wall for a solo home run.

I stood there stunned for a second - not that I ever doubted him but I was thinking to myself, this fool really just hit a home run.

His last time up in the game, he doubled off the wall and ended up stealing third base.

My only wish is that the other Taylor Michaels scholars could have been at the game to see one of our own do his thing.

On the season, he's hitting .330, 18HR's, 67RBI's with 34SB's.

Not too shaby for a former college walk on...

JFK to LAX

The blog is getting no love these days...

One long week is finally coming to an end today. Last week this time I was flying back home to Los Angeles for my annual leadership conference which was cut short for my cousin's wedding.

I haven't been to sleep before 2AM all this week which is going to make for an awful week in the office.

The highlight though was taking the redeye back to NY on Thursday night, not getting any sleep, then going to a wedding that Friday only to stay up until 3:30AM that Saturday morning. I don't even get down like that in school when finals come around.

And now as I sit here yawning in the bed already wanting to take a nap at 11AM, I am thinking to myself maybe those redeye flights aren't worth it sometimes.

More on my week later...

Free Lap Dances For Everyone!

Seems like they were more things going down at the Essence Music Festival than Bobby Brown acting a fool! Jawn Murray has the inside scoop on what went down.

Shug Avery got a little more than she probably expected from one fan.

Toni Braxton got a little more than she bargained for when she brought some men onstage for audience participation during her performance. One guy began rubbing her thighs and then slipped his hand between her legs as the mother of two gave him a lap serenade. Another overzealous fan attempted to rush the stage when Braxton asked for someone to sing along with her.

Security quickly escorted him out. And by the way, if anyone knows Braxton and can deliver her a message, please tell her that the inaudible act just ain't cute anymore. I know I joke and say she's the daughter of Anita Baker and James Brown, and AOL Black Voices' Marcus Vanderberg has nicknamed her Mumbles, but if people can't understand what you're saying on stage, then what's the point?

Jawn also spotted Keyshia Cole rocking a bright red hickey on her neck when she opened the show on Monday night. That's just nasty. Visit the
BV Buzz for additional details on the festival and more!

The Whole F-ing Show

So today my uncle came over and he dug up an old letter that I wrote to him when I was 9. It reads as follows:

"Dear Uncle Mike,

We won 28 to 15.

I scored16 points.

We won 21 to 10.

I scored 19 points.

Marcus V."

Now the first thing that popped in my head was "Damnit, who scored the other two points." So much for that whole thing about no "I" in team. Clearly I was the Kobe Bryant of my time and doing my own thing.

I wonder if this guy stole my other two points....

...which begs the question, if I was scoring 19 of 21...why am I not playing D-I ball and he is....

Sigh....

The Return

Guess who's biz-ack?

So it's been a full week since I posted anything of halfway substance but I have been on blog withdrawl after my trip to Essence last weekend.

I have a laundry list of things I wanted to blog about but just haven't actually sat down and taken the time to construct anything of substance.

In the meantime, I am looking for a new job. Let's just say I will be leaving AOL after the end of the summer and keep it like that. In the long run, it's probably for the best as I close another chapter of my young career. I told myself this would be my last internship and I am trying to sitck to that....

As for Essence and Houston, I personally had a blast the short time I was there. I wish the trip was longer because I didn't get to do half the things I wanted to but I could see myself spending more time in Houston in the future.

Essence itself was a great experience. While everyone said it wasn't the same as being in New Orleans, it was still a fun three days and I am planning on attending next year when they return to the Bayou.

Next stop on my summer travel plans is Los Angeles next Sunday for my yearly leadership conference. I have been looking forward to this trip all summer not so much for the conference but I do miss being at home a little...it's not so fun when school was in and nobody was around but now that it's summer, there are people to visit and In-N-Out to eat.

I'm back to growing my hair out again. I grew it out all Spring semester for the most part and at times it got out of hand but it seemed to get good reactions. My Nana enjoyed it, and really, you can't go against the Nana, so I kept it until the last day of school.

Now I'm back at it again. I figure I gotta go with the hair as long as I have these whack medications in my system which is giving me all this "good" hair. Plus, it makes me look older too which is always a plus in this industry.

I heard a few cracks about my youthfulness at Essence including my favorite:

I was in a VIP Lounge and there was a young lady passing out cigars to everyone. So when she comes over to me, she was like are you even old enough to smoke and made me show some ID. I know I don't look my age but not even 18...

Rant over.
